Sabbatical cost by age and length
Example: you are 30, have $50,000 invested, add $1,500 a month, earn 7% a year, and want $3,000 a month in retirement. With no break you reach financial independence at 48. During the sabbatical you spend $2,500 a month from savings.

Why a sabbatical costs more than you expect
A 6-month sabbatical at 35 takes $24,000 out of your plan up front: $15,000 spent and $9,000 not invested. By 65, that gap grows to $195,482 because of compound growth.
Looked at as time, the cost is smaller. The same break delays financial independence by 10 months. Many people find that trade worth it. The point of the calculator is to make it on real numbers.
How to make a sabbatical cheaper
- Lower the monthly spend. Every month you spend less during the break stays invested.
- Keep some income. Freelance or part-time work during the break reduces what you draw from savings.
- Split it. Two shorter breaks with working years in between can cost less than one long break. The calculator shows this when you add a break.
